Landscapes and Nature

Abstract Salar Flats 02 – Boliva

If you ever wondered what it feels like to walk on the clouds then you should visit the Salar de Uyuni. Located in the southwest corner of Bolivia, the Salar is a blindingly white salt flat, which stretches for more than 4,500 square miles. The landscape is bright, endless and surreal and this is my abstract interpretation of it – Abstract Salar Salt Flats 02.

Snow Falling Soundlessly – Sweden

One night in late March there was an unexpected fall of snow. It came heavily and suddenly. As the of snow fell late into the night, I walked into the woods next to my house and did some sketches of the snowflakes falling against the dark midnight blue sky. Snow falling soundlessly captures the moment.

Endless Abstract Serengeti 01

Serengeti comes from the Maasai Mara word Serengit and means endless plain. This vast area of grassland spans northern Tanzania and southern Kenya and covers approximately 12,000 sq miles. As I travelled through these immense plains, which are covered in swaying grasses and dotted with acacia trees, I experienced an almost hypnotic sensation and my eyes and mind simultaneously lingered and drifted as the landscape blurred before me. This is feeling that I have tried to achieve in this painting.

A field of rapeseed – Sweden

In late Spring fields of rapeseed cover the landscape in blankets of bright yellow. When I was a child in south-east England, I remember the vividness of the yellow flowers. Now I live in Sweden and on a sunny day when the rapeseed is in bloom, I think the yellow cadmium flowers against the cobalt blue sky look like exactly like the colours of the the Swedish flag.

Pink blossom against blue sky – Sweden

For just a few days every Spring the trees in Kungsträgården, Stockholm, are alive with bright pink cherry blossom. This explosion of pale pink petals is a euphoric sight to behold. Also known as sakura in Japan, the flower represents a time of renewal, and the fleeting nature of life.

Pink Hibiscus Detail

The hibiscus is one of the brightest and most vibrant flowers – and when I moved to Mwanza in Tanzania, I was delighted to find that there were scores of them growing wild in my garden. This is a painting of a pink hibiscus.
